Mr. J. Johnson

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what combined police forces have been established under the Police Act, 1946; and which of these were compulsory amalgamations.

The following combined police forces have been established under the Police Act, 1946:

  • Kent Police Force (Kent and Canterbury);
  • Peterborough Combined Police Force (Peterborough, City and Liberty);
  • Hampshire Constabulary (Hampshire and the Isle of Wight);
  • Cornwall County Constabulary (Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly);
  • Durham County Constabulary (County Durham, Darlington and West Hartlepool);
  • Mid-Wales Constabulary (Brecon, Montgomery and Radnor);
  • 93
  • Cheshire Constabulary (Cheshire and Chester);
  • Gwynedd Constabulary (Anglesey. Caernarvon and Merioneth).

Of these, the amalgamation of Brecon, Montgomery and Radnor to form the Mid-Wales Constabulary, and the amalgamation of Cheshire and the City and County Borough of Chester to form the Cheshire Constabulary, were compulsory.
