Mr. Rentonasked the Minister of Food whether he is aware that there will remain a considerable surplus of homegrown onions when the open general import licence is restored on 16th November, 1950; and whether he will accordingly delay the restoration of the open general licence until such time as supply does not greatly exceed demand.
§ Mr. WebbAfter consultation with my colleagues the Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries and the President of the Board of Trade, it has been agreed to delay the restoration of the open general licence for onions until 1st December next. I think this arrangement should meet the legitimate claims of the growers, while at the same time safeguarding the interests of consumers and our international obligations.
