asked the Minister of Agriculture the total amount of subsidies paid to the agricultural industry in the years 1938 and 1948, respectively.

The subsidies paid to the agricultural industry in the United Kingdom amounted to £6.9 million in 1938–39 and £22.1 million in 1948–49.

The figures for 1938–39 include some price supplements such as the fat cattle, oats and barley subsidies. In addition wheat deficiency payments (not borne by the Exchequer) amounted to £9¼ million in 1938–39.
