HC Deb 04 May 1950 vol 474 c229W
126. Wing-Commander Bullus

asked the Minister of Education the number of teachers in the education service of England and Wales; the number of administrative staff in the service in the year 1939; and if he will give the comparative figures for the latest available date.

Mr. Tomlinson

I have no statistics of the number of administrative staff in the education service of England and Wales. On 31st March, 1938, which is the latest date before the war for which I have complete figures, the number of teachers employed in public elementary schools and secondary schools other than direct grant secondary schools and independent schools was 188,700. The number of teachers employed in maintained and assisted primary and secondary schools, as returned by local education authorities in February, 1950, was 211,423.
