HC Deb 04 May 1950 vol 474 c235W
143. Sir W. Wakefield

asked the President of the Board of Trade if he will assist the London Price Regulation Committee in the efforts they are making with the help of the Metropolitan Police to stamp out offences by street traders in Oxford Street against the Goods and Services (Price Control) Acts, 1939–43, as amended by the Defence (Price Controls) Regulations, 1945, by taking steps to increase present maximum penalties for infringements under these Acts and Regulations.

Mr. Bottomley

I have no reason to think that the present maximum penalties for these offences are inadequate, amounting as they do to 12 months' imprisonment and a fine of £500 on summary conviction. On indictment the penalties are much greater, extending to seven years' imprisonment.
