HC Deb 04 May 1950 vol 474 cc231-2W
132. Sir H. Williams

asked the Minister of Education the estimated cost for the current year, per child, in the elementary schools; and how this compares with the corresponding estimate for 1938–39.

Mr. Tomlinson

The cost per pupil in public elementary schools for the year ended 31st March, 1938, was about £15 16s. Since the coming into operation of the Education Act, 1944, public elementary schools, as such, have ceased to exist. The estimated net expenditure per pupil in maintained primary (including nursery) schools for 1949–50 is about £25 including all the ancillary services such as school milk and meals and social and recreative training.
