HC Deb 04 December 1950 vol 482 c30W
Mr. Llewellyn

asked the Attorney-General how many cases were cited before the Leasehold Committee in which ground landlords had evicted tenants under long-term leases from their premises.

The Attorney-General

As I stated in my reply to the hon. Member for Cardiff, North (Mr. Llewellyn) on 12th September, it would not be appropriate to publish parts of the evidence given before the Leasehold Committee out of its context. To quote the number of cases of actual eviction cited to the Committee would, moreover, give no indication of the size of the problem which it was studying. The Committee asked for general criticisms of the law and not for particular cases to be brought to its notice. It was more concerned with the large number of ground leases which are due to fall in the future, and with cases in which at the present moment tenants are being forced either to negotiate fresh leases from fear of eviction or to vacate the premises since they know that there is no defence to an application for eviction by the court.
