HC Deb 25 April 1950 vol 474 cc90-1W
97 and 98. Mr. Teeling

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs (1) what steps he is taking to obtain moneys lent by the British Government to British subjects interned by the Japanese during the last war; and how much money is still involved;

(2) how much money was advanced by His Majesty's Government to British subjects in occupied territories during the last war; and what proportion of it has been recovered.

Mr. Ernest Davies

Gross expenditure amounted to approximately £14,300,000, including £5,900,000 in respect of the Far East. Approximately £3,175,000 has been recovered. Claims for recovery of the debts still outstanding are no longer being pursued, unless there is reason to 'believe that repayment can be made without undue hardship.
