§ Sir W. Smithersasked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury the arrangements which have been made for the new social survey; and what is the estimated cost to the taxpayer.
§ Mr. JayI presume that the hon. Member refers to a survey recently mentioned in the Press. This is part of the work carried out by the Social Survey Division of the Central Office of Information to assist various Government Departments. The way in which such surveys are carried out is described on pages 27 and 28 of the current Annual Report of the Central Office of Information, a copy of which I am sending to the hon. Member. The cost of this particular survey is £1,196 plus a proportion of overhead charges.
