asked the Minister of National Insurance the number of persons who receive supplementary assistance in respect of pensions, unemployment benefit, children's allowances, national assistance, &c., together with the cost.

Dr. Summerskill

On 28th February last about 885,000 persons were receiving assistance grants in supplementation of old age pension, retirement pension or other insurance benefit. Separate figures of the cost are not available, but the total cost of assistance grants is at present about £50 million a year.
