HC Deb 28 October 1949 vol 468 c194W
Mr. A. Lewis

asked the Minister of National Insurance if he will give an estimate of the expectation of life of old age pensioners now, as compared with four years after the end of the First World War.

Mr. Steele

Owing to changes in pension ages and conditions a general comparison is impossible. In 1920 old age pensions were payable at 70, and the average expectation of life at that age was then 8.8 years for a man and 10 years for a woman: it is now 10 years and 11.8 years respectively.
