HC Deb 25 October 1949 vol 468 c134W
Mr. Prescott

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs what consideration has been given to possible revision of the Congo Basin Treaties relative to Japan; and if he will make a statement on the present position.

Mr. Mayhew

As I informed the hon. Member on 26th May, 1948, the Congo Basin Treaties need revision to bring them into line with modern requirements, but other Governments besides His Majesty's Government are directly and equally concerned. I have nothing to add to that statement.

As regards the position of Japan in relation to these treaties, I said that the question was under consideration in connection with the Japanese Peace Treaties. No treaty has yet been concluded and the position is therefore the same as it was last year.
