§ Major Beamishasked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs how many displaced persons in Western Europe are classified as irrepatriable and as institutional cases; and what proposals His Majesty's Government have recently made or will make to help solve this problem in conjunction with the other members of the United Nations.
§ Mr. MayhewIt is estimated that there are some 20,000 displaced persons in Europe who require institutional care and who have so far been unwilling to return to their countries of origin. The International Refugee Organisation, with the full support of all its members, including His Majesty's Government, is actively engaged in measures for their permanent resettlement either in their countries of present residence or elsewhere. The Allied High Commission has undertaken responsibility for the welfare of displaced persons remaining in Germany and discussions have already been held with the German authorities in the British zone with a view to the permanent care of institutional cases.
