asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what steps he proposes to take to increase recruitment for the new Civil Defence Service.

Since volunteering has been in progress for only 10 days, it is too early to say what steps will be required, but I propose, for the present, to rely primarily on the efforts of the local authorities.
