HC Deb 02 November 1949 vol 469 cc47-8W
33. Major Beamish

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Admiralty what restrictions have been placed upon public entry into the grounds of Herstmonceux Castle; whether he is aware of the annoyance caused to local people by these restrictions which did not exist until his Department became responsible for the castle and grounds; and what relaxations he can now announce.

Mr. W. Edwards

When the Castle was in private ownership, before the war, visitors were admitted on three afternoons a week during the summer months. From July of this year until the end of October visitors have been admitted to the grounds on two afternoons a week. Owing to shortage of staff and to alterations still in hand it is not possible to expand the facilities at the present time.
