HC Deb 30 May 1949 vol 465 cc128-9W
55. Mr. Peter Freeman

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether he is aware that the British Military Administration in Eritrea has outlawed the Eritrean Youth Movement for reunion with Ethiopia and seized the property of the organisation; and whether he will give instructions for such property to be restored and for rights of propaganda and organisation to be extended to the Eritrean Youth Movement.

Mr. McNeil

The Chief Administrator of Eritrea issued an order on 6th April declaring illegal the Youth Movement of the Unionist Party of Eritrea on the grounds that it had been carrying out subversive activities likely to endanger public security in the territory. My right hon. Friend has since received a report from the Chief Administrator setting out the reasons which rendered such action necessary on his part. Study of the report is not yet completed, but on the evidence available it would seem that the action taken by the Chief Administrator was fully justified.
