§ 19. Mr. Platts-Millsasked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs what is the outcome of the consideration given to the implications of the recent ruling of the Supreme Court of the United States that the Bermuda base, leased to the United States of America by Great Britain, was subject to United States legislation; and whether he is satisfied that there has been no abatement of British sovereignty.
§ Mr. BevinAs the hon. Member may be aware, the United States Government made an application for a re-hearing by the Supreme Court of the case to which he refers, and I understand that this application has just been refused by the Court. In the circumstances, I now propose to discuss certain implications of the opinion of the Supreme Court with the United States Government, though as stated in the answer given to the hon. Member on 7th February last, British sovereignty over the leased areas was not questioned by the Court.
