Mr. Errollasked the Minister of Town and Country Planning how many deep bore-holes were sunk, and what was the depth and cost of each, in the site which was under consideration for the development of a new town at Mobberley by his Department prior to August 1948; and what was the result of these borings.
§ Mr. SilkinEleven deep bore-holes were sunk in the Mobberley area between February, 1947, and June, 1948. The first group, costing £4,507, consisted of four holes, which went to depths of 400, 400, 775 and 200 feet respectively. The second group, costing £11,433, consisted of seven holes, which went to depths of 900, 685, 551, 600, 550, 650 and 813 feet respectively. It is not possible to apportion the cost accurately to the individual holes.
As regards the result of these borings I have been advised that whereas they show that the eastern part of the site originally proposed would be liable to subsidence, the western half is likely to remain stable; and it is probable that the new site which is now under consideration will include this western half.
