THE EARL OF MANSFIELDasked His Majesty's Government, whether they are aware that the buildings of the General Post Office, Kingston, Jamaica, are quite inadequate to deal with the present volume of postal traffic, thus causing great inconvenience both inside and outside the island, through prolonged postal delays; and whether it is proposed to take steps in the near future to improve the position.
§ THE MINISTER OF STATE FOR COLONIAL AFFAIRS (THE EARL OF LISTOWEL)The inadequacy of postal facilities in Jamaica is a matter of internal administration for which the72WA Island Government is responsible. My right honourable friend has, however, consulted the Governor, and is informed that the General Post Office in Kingston is inadequate to meet modern requirements, but that the Colony is unlikely to be in a position to embark on any large scale building programme in the near future. Certain additions are being made this year, however, which will help to relieve congestion in the parcels post branch, and a Standing Committee has been appointed, with a view to finding additional space for Departments which, like the General Post Office, have outgrown their present accommodation.
