HC Deb 21 January 1949 vol 460 c66W
Mr. Spearman

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he is aware that cheques for Surtax and Capital Levy, payable to the Commissioners of Inland Revenue, sent from Whitby on 3rd January, had not been acknowledged or cashed by 17th January; and if he will take steps to expedite the work of this Department.

Sir S. Cripps

I regret that there has recently been some delay in issuing acknowledgments, mainly because of the large number of payments of Special Contribution remitted on or about the 1st January, for which sufficient trained staff could not be provided. It is hoped to overtake the arrear during the next two or three weeks. Payments will, of course, be treated, for the purposes of computing interest, as having been made when they were remitted.
