HC Deb 15 February 1949 vol 461 cc149-50W
96. Mr. Nally

asked the President of the Board of Trade what changes are contemplated in the restrictions on the export of goods of potential military value.

Mr. H. Wilson

The desirability of extending our export controls to cover a wider range of goods of potential military value from the point of view of our security interests is constantly under review by His Majesty's Government. As a result of a recent examination of the whole position, it is intended to subject an additional range of goods to export control. This control will be operated in such a way that the goods in question, unless the subject of prior commitments, are not made available if this would be contrary to our security interests.

In reaching their decisions His Majesty's Government have been fully aware of the need for keeping in touch with their principal partners in Western Europe and with the United States Government, if the United Kingdom controls are to be effective. His Majesty's Government have also been in touch with the other Commonwealth Governments principally concerned. The additional list of goods of potential military value has not yet been finally elaborated in the light of the discussions mentioned above, but His Majesty's Government expect to be in a position to promulgate their new list in the near future.
