HC Deb 09 February 1949 vol 461 c53W
27. Mr. Longden

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies if he is aware of the continuance of the marketing of young girls in Singapore; and what he intends to do about it.

Mr. Creech Jones

I have given attention to this matter and the Government of Singapore has adopted a variety of measures to prevent this evil and continues to do everything in its powers to eradicate the evil. The existing law is being strengthened and provision made for the registration of all female children not living with their natural parents or legal guardians. Stricter control of immigration has led to a decrease in the number of girls brought from China into Singapore.
