HC Deb 09 February 1949 vol 461 c55W
71. Mr. Janner

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he is aware that despite the severe strain imposed upon them by present conditions, the planters and miners and other workers in the rubber and tin industries in Malaya have been able to maintain and even increase output during recent months; and what steps he proposes to take to improve the present conditions under which they are living and working.

Mr. Rees-Williams

Yes. His Majesty's Government are deeply appreciative of the steadfastness of the planters, miners and other workers in Malaya in the face of difficulty and danger. The High Commissioner, who is responsible for taking the measures necessary to safeguard life and property, is, I know, making every effort to restore conditions under which all classes in Malaya can carry on their work with confidence and security.
