HC Deb 09 February 1949 vol 461 cc70-1W
Mr. Bartlett

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he is aware of the high price demanded for ordinary kitchen swabs; and whether he will reduce the 66⅔ per cent. Purchase Tax upon articles so essential to cleanliness in the kitchen.

Mr. Jay

The hon. Member will not expect me to anticipate my right hon. and learned Friend's Budget Statement; but I must point out that the increase in the price of kitchen swabs, as of other articles, is not wholly attributable to the Purchase Tax.
