HC Deb 09 February 1949 vol 461 cc53-4W
29. Mr. Low

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies how much of the cost of the Jewish detainee camps in Cyprus was defrayed by the former Palestine Government; and whether the remainder of the cost will be recovered from Palestine assets held in the United Kingdom.

73. Mr. Piratin

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies to what account will the £850,000 estimated expenditure during 1948–49 on the Jewish detainee camps in Cyprus be charged.

Mr. Creech Jones

All expenditure for the Jewish detainee camps in Cyprus up to 31st March, 1948, amounting to £4,335,000, has been met by the former Palestine Government. Expenditure after 14th May, 1948, will form part of the deficit on account of the Government of Palestine and will be dealt with in the financial settlement to be negotiated with the appropriate successor authorities.
