HC Deb 09 February 1949 vol 461 c59W
54. Mr. Baker White

asked the Minister of Food what additional rations are granted to inshore fishermen working their own boats within the three-mile limit.

Dr. Summerskill

The extra allowances of rationed food granted to inshore fishermen vary according to the time normally spent afloat and are dependent on the availability of shore catering facilities. Crews of fishing boats are collectively eligible for an allowance on the industrial canteen scale when they are continuously fishing for periods of more than eight hours per day, without access to catering facilities, and individual fishermen in similar circumstances are eligible for the grant of the special cheese ration. If inshore fishermen habitually spend the greater part of their time, both day and night, afloat they are eligible for an individual scale of rations comparable with those given to articled seamen.
