asked the Postmaster-General whether he is aware of the acute shortage of telephone exchange equipment in most parts of Huntingdonshire; and what steps he is taking to overcome the shortage and enable the considerable number of premises requiring telephones to have them.

Mr. Hobson

Yes. My right hon. Friend regrets that in Huntingdonshire, as elsewhere, it is not possible to meet all demands for telephone service. This is largely due to restriction of supplies of telephone plant for home* use, in order to permit of maximum exports. There are about 400 waiting applicants in the county at present, and I hope that some additional equipment will be available during the next few months to ease the position.
