§ Mr. Wilfred PalingAt 31st August, 1948, there were 501,217 applicants waiting for telephone service, including 38,904 for whom a telephone was in course of installation. 366,543 new lines were provided during the preceding 12 months, an increase of 30 per cent. over the figure for the peak pre-war year.
