§ 80. Mr. Chetwyndasked the Minister of Food if he will give an assurance to sugar producers in the Commonwealth about the purchase of their exportable surpluses.
§ Dr. SummerskillYes. His Majesty's Government, for the next five years will guarantee producers of sugar in Australia, South Africa, the British West Indies, British Guiana, Mauritius, Fiji and East Africa, an outlet for their exportable production of sugar, either in the United Kingdom or in other countries within the Commonwealth, by arrangement with those countries. This assurance is effective from 1st January, 1948, and covers the crops to be grown in the years 1948–52 inclusive. Prices will, unless otherwise agreed, be negotiated annually, having regard to world market conditions and all other factors.
