95. Mr. Osborne

asked the Minister of Food how many offices are maintained by his Potato and Carrot Control Department; where they are situated; how many people are employed; and at what annual cost.

Mr. Strachey

The Potato and Carrot Division has 72 offices; two headquarters' offices in London and Oxford, and 70 area offices in the principal cities and towns and main centres of production. The number of non-industrial staff employed is 1,298 at an estimated annual cost in salaries and wages of £454,000, in addition to which 334 industrial staff are employed in 41 sack depots and one seed store at an estimated annual cost of £62,000. 152 of the non-industrial staff are employed on behalf of the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries in the payment of acreage subsidies to growers of potatoes, wheat and rye.
