HL Deb 09 November 1948 vol 159 cc315-6WA
THE EARL OF MANSFIELD

asked His Majesty's Government whether they will state when they expect to receive the Report of the Committee now considering the conditions of service in the police forces; and whether they will request the Committee to consider making an interim recommendation on new rates of pay, so as to encourage the immediate recruitment of suitable applicants now turning to other careers, as the result of the remuneration now offered and considered inadequate under present day conditions.

THE LORD CHANCELLOR

I am informed by the Chairman that the time required by some witnesses to prepare their evidence has delayed the Committee's progress, and it is not yet possible to estimate when a Report will be ready for submission. The answer to the second part of the question is in the negative; it must be for the Committee themselves to decide, in the light of the evidence given to them, whether they will submit an Interim Report on the subject of pay.

House adjourned at five minutes before five o'clock.
