HC Deb 09 November 1948 vol 457 c168W
61. Mr. Hale

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer why an old age pension is excluded from consideration in computing a wife's special earned income relief.

Sir S. Cripps

Section 27 (2) of the Finance Act, 1946, provides in regard to payments of benefit under the National Insurance Act that wife's earned income relief shall be allowed only where the. payments are by way of unemployment benefit, sickness benefit or maternity benefit. A wife's old age pension is, therefore, debarred from that relief which is given as an inducement to married women to enter, or remain in, industry.
