HC Deb 04 November 1948 vol 457 c91W
1. Mr. Tiffany

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he will introduce legislation to provide payment to persons called upon to give jury service, having in mind the serious losses of earnings which frequently arise especially when cases last for several days.

Mr. Ede

As was announced in the King's Speech a Bill is to be introduced during the present Session to provide for the payment of jurors.

19. Dr. S. Jeger

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether, in view of the additional work placed upon them by the National Health Service Act, he will consider the exemption of pharmacists and chemists from jury service.

Mr. Ede

Exemption from jury service is governed by statutory provisions and legislation would be required for the purpose which my hon. Friend has in mind. I cannot hold out any hope of legislation on the question of exemptions from jury service at the present time.
