HC Deb 02 November 1948 vol 457 cc43-4W
Sir W. Smithers

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer why, in view of the fact that post-war credits are payable only to men over 65 and women over 60, he permits the amount of a younger taxpayer's post-war credit to be used as a means of wiping out alleged under-collections of tax.

Sir S. Cripps

I would refer the hon. Member to the reply I gave today to figures for the last three years? I do not, however, think that the time and labour involved in extracting similar figures for all the years back to 1939 would be justified by the usefulness of the result, particularly in view of the special conditions of the war years.

Following is the table:

the hon. Member for Bury (Mr. W. Fletcher) on this subject.
