HC Deb 04 May 1948 vol 450 c114W
73 and 74. Mr. Scott-Elliot

asked the President of the Board of Trade (1) what is the target for the current year for exports of cotton piece goods to the Argentine;

(2) what is the target for the current year for exports of cotton piece goods to South Africa.

Mr. Bottomley

No specific targets have been laid down for exports of cotton piece goods to individual markets other than Canada. In the case of Argentina, the Trade and Payments Agreement concluded earlier this year provides for the import in 1948 of £10 million worth of British goods now restricted, and negotiations are continuing to ensure that cotton manufactures, including piece goods, will receive a suitable share of this sum. As regards South Africa, it is hoped that this market will obtain a good share of the increase in exports which is expected over the year as a whole.
