§ 99. Mr. Parkerasked the Secretary of State for Commonwealth Relations what steps are being taken to establish small industries, such as farming and textiles, in Basutoland, in view of the large emigration from the territory.
§ Mr. Gordon-WalkerAs the result of measures taken to improve farming methods in Basutoland there was last year an exportable surplus of maize for the first time in 16 years. Three demonstration farms were established in 1943; they are managed by Basuto farmers under supervision. Thirteen thousand vegetable gardens are in production under the control and advice of the Agricultural Department of Basutoland. A home industry organisation was set up during the war, mainly to develop the spinning and weaving of wool at local centres. Satisfactory progress is being made with this scheme, which is financed by the native authorities.
