Mr. Parkerasked the Secretary of State for Commonwealth Relations whether he is aware that the expenditure figures for 1941–46, published in the Basutoland Annual Report, show heavy expenditure on the Resident Commissioner for pensions and gratuities in proportion to other expenditure; and what steps are being taken to reduce the cost of administration.
§ Mr. Gordon-WalkerThe Vote for the Resident Commissioner's Department in Basutoland has been considerably increased by the cost of living allowances adopted in 1942. There has been no marked increase in the cost of pensions and gratuities. Every effort is made to secure efficiency and economy in the Administration; but my hon. Friend will understand that the development projects and social services have inevitably meant an increase of staff.
