§ 31. Mr. Skeffingtonasked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he is aware that the increased tax on tobacco is causing great discontent in Cyprus, where the local population cannot afford the high price.
Mr. Creech JonesNo. The increase in the tax has been followed by a decline in consumption of only 9 per cent., which does not indicate that the local population cannot afford the new price. I understand that no more discontent has been shown than normally accompanies such an increase in taxation.
