HC Deb 12 February 1948 vol 447 cc118-9W
Mr. Ellis Smith

asked the Minister of Supply if he can give in tabular form the tonnage of steel produced each month for 1946 and 1947; and the licences granted for the use of steel for each of these months.

Mr. G. R. Strauss

The information asked for in the first part of the Question is as follows:

Production of Steel Ingots and Castings Month
(Four or five weekly period) 1946: '000 ingot tons
January (5 weeks) 1,143.8
February 988.7
March 1,022.7
April 1,008 4
May (5 weeks) 1,309.5
June 960.2
July (5 weeks) 1,130.7
August 903.7
September 954.0
October (5 weeks) 1,271.7
November 1.055.0
December 945.3
Total 1946 (52 weeks) 12,693.7
1947:
January (5 weeks) 1,199.0
February 825.0
March 783.9
April (5 weeks) 1,182.1

October (5 weeks) 1.376.5
November 1,090.3
December (5 weeks) 1,216.0
Total 1947 (53 weeks) 12,724.5

It is not possible to correlate the above totals with the quarterly allocations of steel, since such allocations are based on the total supplies of steel available, i.e. home production plus imports and surplus disposals.
