Mr. Isaacs

The numbers of insured persons registered as unemployed on 12th January, 1948, at Airdrie and Shotts employment exchanges were as follows:

Airdrie Shotts
Men 773 233
Boys 25 2
Women 625 95

102. Miss Herbison

asked the Minister of Labour what percentage of workers employed at the factories in the Chapelhall and Newhouse Industrial Estates have been drawn from Airdrie employment exchange and Shotts employment exchange, respectively.

Mr. Isaacs

I regret that the information in the form in which my hon. Friend asks for it is not available without a disproportionate amount of work. The total number of workers employed at Chapel-hall is 1,758 and at Newhouse 42. The number of applicants placed at Chapelhall since 1st July, 1947, from Airdrie employment exchange is 463, and from the Shotts employment exchange 21, while the placings at Newhouse from the Airdrie exchange are 9 and none from Shotts.
