HC Deb 02 February 1948 vol 446 cc214-5W
54. Mr. De la Bère

asked the Minister of Agriculture whether in view of the increasing need to make this country self-supporting in foodstuffs, he will inquire how, in Denmark, one acre can support two persons as regards the provision of food, whereas in this country the approximate figures are one person to one and a half acres.

Mr. T. Williams

The number of persons that can be supported per acre depends upon such factors as standards of consumption, dietetic habits, wage levels, soil, climate, farming efficiency and intensity of land utilisation. The hon. Member's method of comparison would, therefore, be misleading.
