HC Deb 02 December 1948 vol 458 c208W
81. Mr. Chetwynd

asked the Minister of Education whether it is possible for free dinners to be provided for children attending schools outside the area covered by the responsible local education committee; and whether assistance can be given towards the cost of transport.

Mr. Tomlinson

In maintained schools and direct grant grammar schools the dinner payment should be reduced or remitted altogether in case of need. The provision of transport is governed by Section 55 of the Education Act, 1944.

Mr. Piratin

asked the Minister of Education how many local education authorities have implemented Circular 97 on the provision of outside assistance in the school meals service; whether he is satisfied with the progress made in the implementation of this circular; and what steps is he taking to ensure its full implementation in letter and in spirit.

Mr. Tomlinson

I have no up-to-date figures, but I am satisfied that most authorities have taken steps to implement Circular 97. I am prepared to take up any instance brought to my notice where adequate assistance is not being provided.
