HC Deb 02 December 1948 vol 458 cc195-6W
Sir W. Smithers

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether he is aware that suppliers of rust-proof oil, suitable for farm machinery, are allowed to buy empty one-gallon tins, but that it is illegal for them to fill them with lubricating oil for re-sale; and what action he proposes to take to remove this anomaly.

Mr. H. Wilson

The purpose of the existing restrictions on the use of particular sizes of containers for particular purposes is to effect economies in the use of plate which is in short supply. The restrictions are at present under review by a Committee of the British Standards Institute representing manufacturers and packing interests from which I expect in due course to receive recommendations. No doubt they will be considering the sizes of containers for the oil to which he refers.
