HC Deb 02 December 1948 vol 458 c210W
84. Mr. Skinnard

asked the Secretary of State for Commonwealth Relations whether he will now abolish the custom whereby chiefs in Basutoland may call out the men of their districts for unpaid agricultural labour.

Mr. P. Noel-Baker

The Basutoland Council considered this matter at a recent session and recommended various reductions in customary agricultural labour. These recommendations arc at present under consideration by the Resident Commissioner in consultation with the Paramount Chief.
