HC Deb 26 April 1948 vol 450 cc4-5W
35. Mr. Platts-Mills

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs if he is aware that Herr Heinrich Wilhelm Kopf, Premier of Lower Saxony, has been appointed to represent Western Germany at the 16-Nation Marshall Plan Conference; that this man is regarded by the Poles as a war criminal; that the Polish Government is demanding his extradition so that he may be brought to trial; that the Nuremberg Tribunal declared that the organisation of which he was administrator was criminal, and that its leaders should be regarded as war criminals; that he is described as such by the United Nations War Crimes Commission; and whether he will take steps to prevent this person representing the German people.

Mr. Mayhew

Herr Kopf has not, as alleged by my hon. Friend, been appointed to represent Western Germany at this or any other conference; nor, as further alleged by my hon. Friend, was the organisation of which he was administrator declared criminal at Nuremberg; nor is he listed as a war criminal by the United Nations War Crimes Commission. The last part of the Question, therefore, does not arise.
