HC Deb 27 November 1947 vol 444 c312W
99. Lieut.-Colonel Boles

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether he is aware that shops in Ceylon are amply supplied with consumer goods such as stair carpets and tweed suitings which are unsuitable for use in a tropical climate and which might be exported to more suitable markets; what steps are being taken to divert from the Colonies in the tropics unsuitable exports of this kind; and whether goods such as these have been paid for, or are sent out on consignment to be paid for when sold.

Mr. H. Wilson

I understand from His Majesty's Trade Commissioner in Ceylon that while supplies of the goods mentioned by the hon. and gallant Member are available in the shops in Ceylon, there is a market for them in that country, and they are not available in excessive quantities. As regards the second part of the Question, these goods are not normally shipped on a consignment basis.
