HC Deb 26 November 1947 vol 444 c287W
Sir W. Smithers

asked the Minister of Food whether, in order to make available as many trucks as possible on railways for coal and other essential commodities, he will arrange for potatoes to be delivered to merchants by road transport.

Mr. Strachey

In conjunction with my right hon. Friend the Minister of Transport I have already made arrangements for a large-scale diversion of potatoes from rail to road and sea transport, which it is estimated will save about 70,000 wagon journeys this season.
