HC Deb 25 November 1947 vol 444 c259W
11. Mr. Anthony Greenwood

asked the Minister of Labour when it was decided to vary the policy announced by the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Labour, in the House of Commons on 22nd April, and to refuse to allow German prisoners of war, who wish to settle here as agricultural workers, to return home for the purpose of seeing their families before taking up residence in this country.

Mr. Ness Edwards

As already announced by my right hon. Friend the Minister for Agriculture, it has been decided to extend to 1948 the scheme permitting German prisoners of war, who volunteer for employment as civilian agricultural workers to remain in this country for a temporary period. Hitherto it has not been found practicable to make arrangements for Germans who volunteer to remain here to be given leave to return home and visit their families, but in view of the extension of the scheme the matter is receiving further consideration.
