HC Deb 24 November 1947 vol 444 c255W
Mr. J. Morrison

asked the Secretary of State for Air how many civilian motor drivers are employed by the Royal Air Force now compared with a year ago, and at what weekly wage; and why these posts cannot be filled by Service drivers.

Mr. A. Henderson

3,011 civilian motor drivers are employed by my Department, compared with 2,981 a year ago. Their weekly wages vary from 91s. 6d. to 107s. 6d. according to the type of vehicle driven, and the district in which they are employed. These men could only be replaced by service drivers by recruiting more drivers into the R.A.F., and there would, therefore, be no saving in manpower.
