HC Deb 20 November 1947 vol 444 cc215-6W
108. Mr. Low

asked the Secretary of State for Commonwealth Relations whether, in view of the present conditions in parts of India and Pakistan, which delay the payment of pensions and allowances by the Governments of India and Pakistan, he is prepared to guarantee that all sums due will be paid or to arrange for the advance of money in other ways to cover the period of delay.

Mr. P. Noel-Baker

European members of the Secretary of State's Services and analogous services have the assurance given by the Prime Minister on the Second Reading of the Indian Independence Bill that they will receive the pensions to which they are entitled. If members of the Secretary of State's Services retire, their salaries while on leave are guaranteed by paragraph 6 of the Prime Minister's statement of 30th April, 1947, which is reproduced in Cmd. 7116. If the hon. Member will bring to my notice, any case of serious delay in payment to a European officer, whether in the classes covered by these undertakings or not, I will gladly inquire into the facts.
